Leaky Gut Syndrome
One of the many things that can cause a leaky gut is eating the wrong diet.

Leaky gut is defined as an intestinal lining that has become permeable and has lost some of its original integrity. This is of major importance when you consider that the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is the highway for absorption of the nutrients to keep us alive and well. Just as a nutrient deficiency can cause leaky gut, a permeable intestinal lining can rob the body of needed elements and precipitate nutritional deficiencies. It is also a physical barrier to invading pathogens, whether they are viruses, bacteria, parasites, or undigested particles of food. A leaky gut lowers the immune system in several ways and causes a host of symptoms such as:

• Malabsorption (not properly absorbing foods)
• Fatigue
• Muscle aches and pains
• Abdominal pain and bloating
• Fever
• Skin Rash
• General feelings of malaise
• Food allergies
• Ulcers
• Chronic Fatigue
• Joint pain
• Migraines
• Diohorea
• Parasitic infections
• Abnormal bowel flora
• Pancreatic insufficiency
• Toxic feelings
• Depression
• Cognitive/memory problems
• Shortness of breath
• Poor exercise tolerance

Leaky gut is correlated to many diseases as a secondary factor and is suspected as being involved as one of the causative factors in several disorders including:

• Multiple sclerosis
• Diabetes
• T- cell lymphomas
• Asthma
• Arthritis
• Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
• Celiac disease
• Dermatitis herpetiformis
• Eczema
• And various other autoimmune diseases

The possible causes are many including lectin damage from eating the wrong foods, antibiotics, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (i.e. ibuprofen, aspirin etc.), refined sugar, parasites, Candida, cytotoxic drugs, trauma, stress, inflammation, food allergies, alcohol, tobacco, low stomach acid, sluggish liver, lack of oxygen in surgery and low stomach acid.

Treatment involves herbs and nutrients to heal the gut lining as well as avoidance of all the factors that can contribute to its cause. Eating right for your genetic type is of prime importance as well as learning better stress coping skills. Many of Carole’s patients have developed a leaky gut through a combination of stress and the wrong diet which is contributing to their on going symptoms. If the leaky gut issue is not addressed a patient can suffer needlessly for years. Leaky gut sydrome is easily diagnosed with a simple urine test.
