Autophagy: The cells’ waste collection and recycling service

Autophagy (from the Greek meaning “self-eating”) is your body’s brilliant, built-in system for cellular clean-up and renewal. It’s how we break down and recycle damaged cells, clear out toxins, and make way for fresh, healthy function. Think of it as your inner housekeeping service-vital for energy, immunity, ageing, and chronic disease prevention. Many people have sluggish autophagy, which means your garbage removal system is not working efficiently. Imagine every cell in your body is like a little house.

Inside that house, every day: Things break, old furniture piles up, packaging, dust and rubbish accumulates. If nothing clears it, the house becomes cluttered, dysfunctional and eventually unsafe. First the cell has to recognise what’s waste.

This includes damaged proteins; broken Mitochondria; old cell parts – and even invading pathogens

Bagging it up

The cell then wraps the waste in a structure (autophagosome) – a bit like putting all your rubbish in sealed bags so it doesn’t leak everywhere.

Why Autophagy Matters

When autophagy is working well, you may experience:

  • Sharper mental clarity
  • Healthier weight balance
  • Improved immune resilience
  • Clearer skin and slower signs of ageing
  • Reduced inflammation and cellular stress

Disrupted or underactive autophagy is now linked to:

  • Autoimmune diseases (like Hashimoto’s and rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Chronic fatigue and mitochondrial dysfunction
  • Neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s)
  • Cancer and metabolic syndrome

How to Naturally Boost Autophagy

There are safe, gentle ways to encourage your body’s own repair mechanisms-no extreme measures needed.

  1. Intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating - Going 12–16 hours without food gives your body the space to clear cellular debris, reduce inflammation, and reset immune signals.
  2. Nutrient-dense, Anti-Inflammatory diet

Efficient Autophagy thrives on:

1. Certain Foods –

  • Cruciferous vegetables (e.g. broccoli, kale, cauliflower)
  • Polyphenol-rich foods (e.g. green tea, turmeric, blueberries)
  • Healthy fats (e.g. olive oil, avocado, omega-3s)
  • Clean proteins in moderate amounts

2. Herbs that Support Cellular Renewal

As a medical herbalist, I often include gentle autophagy-activating plants such as:Schisandra (supports liver detox and mitochondrial tone)

  • Green tea (Camellia sinensis) - rich in EGCG, if people tolerate it
  • Turmeric (Curcuma longa) - anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective
  • Resveratrol and quercetin - modulate cellular repair and immune pathways
  • Cleavers - help cellular and lymphatic cleansing
  • Milk Thistle - supports detoxification and cellular recycling

3. Movement and Sauna

  • Gentle exercise and heat exposure like sauna or hot baths, cold plunges, fasting mimic hormetic stress and enhance cellular recycling. Hormesis is a term used to describe a process whereby small, controlled doses of stress can make the body and its cells more resilient, activating cellular "housecleaning," DNA repair, and antioxidant defenses.

4. Deep Rest and Sleep

  • Autophagy is activated during deep sleep-especially in the brain. Prioritising restorative sleep is one of the simplest yet most profound ways to activate your healing potential

Is Autophagy Right to Activate Right Now?

Not everyone benefits from stimulating autophagy all the time. In some cases, such as during pregnancy, very low body weight, adrenal depletion, or certain infections it’s better to support other systems first. This is why a personalised approach matters.

Working With Me

I can help patients understand whether autophagy support is needed via looking at the autophagy index in the Endobiogenic full GEMMA panel and whether it is appropriate for their current phase of healing. We look at hormonal balance, immune function, nutrient status, and energetic terrain to guide the process safely.

If you’re curious about how to harness your body’s inner intelligence for renewal, schedule a consultation or get in touch. We’ll co-create a plan to help your body gently repair, release, and restore itself from within.
